Ford has issued a Ford Transit Custom recall covering 777 vans in Australia over a fault that could lead to a fuel leak and, in the worst case, a vehicle fire. The recall applies to certain 2024 to 2026 model year Transit Custom Double Cab in Van variants.
The notice, REC-006724 under Ford campaign 26S59, was published on the federal government's vehicle recalls register on 18 September 2026. If you run one of these vans for work or family duty, this is one to act on rather than file away.
What Is Actually Wrong With the Van
According to the official recall notice, a manufacturing defect can leave too little clearance between a bulkhead mounting bolt and the fuel tank. Over time, that contact point could let fuel or fuel vapour escape.
On its own, a leak is bad enough. Add an external ignition source and it could result in a vehicle fire. The notice warns that a fire could increase the risk of injury or death to occupants, other road users and bystanders.
Ford has described the campaign as a precautionary, voluntary recall and says it is not aware of any related incidents involving Australian customers. That is reassuring, but it is not a reason to delay the fix.
How to Check Whether Your Van Is Affected
Ford says it will contact affected owners in writing and ask them to book the van in with an authorised Ford dealer. The inspection and repair are free of charge.
You do not have to wait for the letter. The recall notice on vehiclerecalls.gov.au includes a downloadable list of affected VINs. Your VIN is on the registration papers, the compliance plate and usually at the base of the windscreen.

Tradies: Plan Around the Downtime
For most private owners, a recall visit is a minor inconvenience. For a tradie or small business that runs a Ford Transit Custom every day, a van off the road is lost income.

When you call, ask how long the inspection and repair will take, whether parts are in stock, and whether the dealer can offer a same-day turnaround or a loan vehicle. In April 2026, 2,246 Transit Customs from 2024 and 2025 were recalled because the digital owner's manual could show incorrect information about child seat anchor points, airbags and seatbelts.
Ford also recalled 7,724 Mustangs in September 2026 over an engine bay wiring harness ground terminal that could be damaged by vibration, potentially causing a loss of engine power. That is separate from the earlier Mustang wiper recall we covered in August.
What This Means if You Are Buying New
A recall is not automatically a reason to avoid a model. Every major brand issues them, and a transparent, free fix is exactly how the system is supposed to work.
What matters is how a dealer handles it.
