The first electric BMW M3 will launch in 2027 at a similar price to the new petrol version, BMW M's head of sales has confirmed. Both will share styling and tech, but the platforms underneath are completely different. Here's what it means for Australian performance car buyers.

The petrol version is not being phased out

The manual gearbox, currently available in non-Competition versions of the current M3, may not survive. BMW is reportedly considering dropping it to reduce complexity and help with emissions compliance. For purists, that is the genuinely sad news in this announcement.
