Build date, model year and RAV entry answer different questions. When two quotes describe apparently identical cars, ask for the vehicle identification number and the documents behind each year label before comparing the prices.
The Register of Approved Vehicles is the government's database of vehicles approved for supply to the Australian market. It is an identity and approval check, not a substitute for the manufacturer's equipment record.
Build a three-part identity file
Build date: request the manufacturer's record for the actual vehicle. Queensland's vehicle plate guidance distinguishes the manufacturing date from the date a vehicle met Australian requirements. Older plated vehicles and newer RAV-recorded vehicles need the appropriate evidence.
Model year: ask the dealer to state the manufacturer's model-year designation and variant code in writing. Treat this as a specification question: which engine, safety equipment, software and options are fitted to this VIN?
RAV entry: search the actual VIN through the register's public search link. Save the result alongside the build evidence. Ask the seller to explain any mismatch rather than choosing whichever date makes the car sound newer.
Do not use an online VIN decoder as your only specification evidence. Ask the manufacturer or its authorised dealer to resolve the vehicle identity when the records disagree.
Work through a mismatched advertisement
Consider this fictional quote: an advertisement says MY2027, the dealer supplies a November 2026 build record, and the approval entry was made later. These labels do not, by themselves, prove an error or prove the car has a particular update.
Write down three separate answers: manufacturing month and year; manufacturer's model-year code; and approval-entry date. Then list the equipment that matters to you and obtain VIN-specific confirmation for each item.
If heated seats were your reason for choosing the newer version, a year label is a weaker answer than a written specification confirming heated seats on the supplied car.
Make the contract identify what matters
Ask for the VIN, full variant, fitted options, build date and any required model-year specification to appear in the written deal. If the seller proposes substituting a different car, repeat the reconciliation before accepting it.
Our demo-versus-new guide covers the separate questions of warranty time and discount value. This identity worksheet comes first: it establishes what you are actually comparing.
