Spare wheel or repair kit: check before a trip

A spare-wheel badge on a specification sheet is not a roadside plan. Inspect the equipment, read its limits and check what assistance can reach your intended route.

A spare wheel or tyre repair kit needs checking before a regional trip, ideally before buying the car. Open the storage area and identify what is actually there, including the tools needed to use it.

Ford's tyre-mobility-kit guidance shows that the kit is a specific piece of equipment with its own operating procedure and directs owners to the vehicle manual. A generic compressor is not proof that all punctures can be managed.

Inventory the actual car

Record whether it has a full-size spare, temporary spare, inflator-and-sealant kit or another manufacturer-specified arrangement. Check whether optional equipment, a different wheel package or later modifications changed what fits in the storage space.

For a spare, locate the relevant jack, wheel tools, locking-wheel-nut key if fitted, and the manual's lifting points. Confirm the spare's condition and pressure as instructed. Do not practise lifting a car without appropriate instruction and a safe location.

For a kit, identify the inflator, power connection, sealant and its expiry or replacement instructions. Ask the seller to replace missing or expired supplied equipment before delivery if that is part of your agreement.

Match the response to the damage

A puncture the kit instructions cover: follow those instructions and their pressure, speed, distance and recheck conditions. Seek a tyre professional's advice about the next step.

Damage the kit does not cover, or uncertainty about the tyre: use assistance rather than assuming sealant makes the tyre usable. Do not decide a sidewall injury is safe from an online checklist.

A flat on a dangerous shoulder: finding somewhere safe and contacting assistance takes priority over demonstrating that you can change a wheel.

The manual for the exact car and equipment supplies the limits. A speed printed on another vehicle's temporary spare does not establish your limit.

Check the route and assistance terms

Ask your roadside-assistance provider about the area, towing distance, access restrictions and puncture help. Record the answer rather than assuming a membership guarantees rapid help everywhere.

Our Shark 6 spare-wheel recall article concerns a specific safety notice. Check the actual vehicle's recall status separately; possessing a spare does not prove its mounting system is clear of outstanding work.
